Tanya Peterson from Holistic Well-Being Services explains that people with a wide range of problems and concerns may benefit from counselling. Feeling depressed or anxious, being indecisive, having fears of failure, dealing with identity questions – these are some common reasons why people come to see a counsellor. Clients also come with issues concerning relationships with friends, dating partners, and family. Some people call on counsellors for help navigating developmental stages through life, such as career changes, the transitions of single to couple to single again, grief and loss, or having a child, midlife turning points, sensing a loss of self and direction. Some seek counselling in a state of crisis, when they feel overwhelmed and unable to cope, or when friends or family suggest it as they are may not able to provide the help needed.
There can be many other issues, unique to the individual, for which a person might seek counselling. If they are troubled by something and want to talk about it, no problem is “too small” to deserve care and attention. Some people come for a few sessions with a counsellor, others come for longer periods of time. This decision is made by the client and counsellor together, depending on the needs of the client.
In general, it’s a good idea to consider seeing a counsellor if your difficulties persist for an extended period of time, and/or if you experience symptoms that interfere with your daily activities, take care to be honest with yourself, if you have noticed that the concerns seem to subside then reoccur again later, a counsellor can help to break the pattern and assist you in moving forward and get off that merry go around that issues can create.
Counselling can help people to move forward in life. Many people lose the ability to sense/know their true feelings, or have difficulty managing, perhaps feeling torn and fragmented, suffering in both mind and body.
Holistic Counselling brings people back to being themselves, vital and whole.
